Do French citizens need a visa to Russia?
Yes, they do. To enter Russia, passport holders of France must have a valid Russian visa. As of August 1, 2023, French can apply online for an electronic visa to visit Russia for up to 30 days. For longer stays or multiple entries a regular visa issued by a Russian consulate is required.
How can French citizens obtain a Russian visa?
Step 1. Get an invitation
To apply for a Russian visa, French citizens must prepare the required documents, including a visa invitation to Russia (also known as visa support), which is the primary. The type of invitation depends on the visa category: tourist, business, private, work, or other, depending on the declared purpose of the visit.

Standard processing takes 4–20 business days. Actual times may vary depending on consulate workload, completeness of submitted documents, and other factors.
As a rule, single- or double-entry visas are issued within 5–7 business days, while multiple-entry visas take 10–12 business days.
For an additional fee, French citizens can request urgent processing to obtain a visa in 1–2 business days.

Tourist visa to Russia for French citizens
If you plan to visit Russia for sightseeing and leisure, you need a tourist visa. The invitation required for this type of visa is issued by licensed tour operators from the federal register, each with their own reference number [1].

The format of the invitation is not important, but the document must contain the tour operator’s details and reference number, as well as the passport data of the French applicant. Business visa to Russia for French citizens
If a French citizen plans to conduct business negotiations in Russia, look for business partners, sign or extend contracts, or participate in seminars or auctions, they need a business visa. For this, an invitation is required from a Russian legal entity, which can be issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation (formerly the FMS), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, or on the letterhead of the Russian inviting organization.
What is the validity period of a business visa for French citizens?
The maximum validity period for a business visa for French citizens is five years. However, the total continuous or cumulative stay in Russia on a multiple-entry business visa for all EU citizens cannot exceed 90 days in any 180-day period.
If a French citizen has not previously had business visas to Russia but requires a business visa for more than three months, it is possible to apply using an invitation from the Ministry of Internal Affairs (electronic) or a Telex. Such official invitations can be issued immediately for a period of 365 days with multiple entries, even if the applicant has never held a Russian business visa before.

A direct company invitation is a letter of request from a Russian organization for granting a visa to a French citizen, addressed to the Russian consulate. This invitation can usually be issued within one day.
An electronic invitation is issued by the Department for Migration Issues of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (formerly the Federal Migration Service) on the basis of a request from an accredited inviting organization. This electronic invitation, containing a barcode, is sent in digital form to the consulate specified at the time of application, and the applicant receives a printable copy by email. Only this printed copy is needed for the visa application, as there is no original document. Processing time for an electronic invitation for French citizens is regulated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and is between 20 and 30 business days.
Telex is a direct instruction from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation to the consulate. When applying, the foreign citizen only needs to provide the Telex number (code). Processing time for Telex for French citizens is also 20–30 business days.
What is the difference between a Telex and an Electronic invitation?
If a French citizen has already held Russian business visas, we recommend applying for a company invitation letter:
- A company invitation letter is cheaper than a Telex or an electronic invitation from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

- This invitation type makes it possible to obtain a visa for 2 to 5 years (if you have previously used multiple-entry visas to Russia), whereas electronic invitations and Telexes allow you to apply for a visa valid for up to one year.

Electronic visa (e-visa) to Russia for French citizens
The unified electronic visa is a type of visa document that allows foreigners to enter Russia without obtaining a standard visa sticker in their passport. No invitation to Russia is required to apply for an e-visa.
An e-visa can be used for tourist, business, humanitarian, or private visits, as well as for participation in socio-political, economic, or sporting events. The validity of the electronic visa is 120 days from the date of issue. The maximum stay in Russia allowed with an e-visa is no more than 30 days from the date of entry. Please note that the e-visa is only valid for single entry.

Private visa to Russia for French citizens
For visiting relatives or friends, French citizens may apply for a private visa. The inviting party must obtain a private invitation in accordance with Russian law. The inviter can be a Russian citizen or a foreigner with a residence permit. However, in practice this option is often less convenient: read here why a private visa is not recommended.
Validity period of a private visa
A private visa may be issued as single-entry, double-entry, or multiple-entry. It can be valid from 30 days up to one year, allowing you to stay in Russia for the entire duration of the visa without leaving the country.
Obtaining a private visa by invitation
If a French citizen is invited by a private person residing in Russia, the host must contact the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation at their place of residence.
The invitation is issued on Ministry of Internal Affairs letterhead in electronic form with an individual number. The processing time may take up to 30 days with background checks of the French applicant (for criminal records and previous visa or administrative violations). If the French applicant has violated Russian law during previous visits, the invitation may be refused.
Obtaining a private visa by application from a close relative
Since September 2021, French citizens who are close relatives of Russian nationals can apply for a one-year multiple-entry private visa, based on a written application by the Russian citizen requesting entry for a close family member.
Close relatives include:
- parents
- spouses
- children
- children’s spouses
- siblings (full or half)
- adoptive parents and adopted children
- grandchildren
- grandparents
The application must be submitted by the Russian citizen to the consular section in France, or via a visa center. If the applicant is in Russia, the original notarized application is required. You must also provide the original or notarized copy of a document confirming the relationship (such as a birth or marriage certificate) that is recognized in Russia.
Private visa for exceptional cases
In exceptional circumstances, a private visa can be issued without a formal invitation — by decision of the Russian Ambassador or Consul in France upon a written request from the applicant. Such a visa may be granted to an French citizen who needs to urgently visit Russia due to a serious illness or the death of a close relative, or to receive emergency medical care. All grounds must be documented.
How to obtain a private invitation to Russia for French citizens
Our company does not issue private invitations. We generally recommend applying for a tourist visa or a business visa instead, as these optiones are faster and easier to obtain. A private invitation can only be obtained by contacting the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia directly at the registration address.
Work visa to Russia for French citizens
To work legally in Russia, a French citizen must obtain a work visa. Do not confuse a work visa with a business visa — only a work visa allows official employment and salary in a Rusian company. The process of obtaining this type of visa is initiated and managed by the Russian employer, who is responsible for issuing the invitation. The procedure is complex and consists of several stages:
- The employer obtains a work permit (done by the inviting company in Russia).
- An invitation for the foreign employee is issued, allowing for the obtainment of a work visa valid for 90 days.
- Upon arrival in Russia, the foreign national must register at the local migration office.
- The work visa is then extended for the entire duration of the work permit.
- The migration registration for the foreigner is also extended for the entire validity period of the visa.
The maximum duration of a work visa is 3 years (for Highly Qualified Specialists —HQS). Unlike business visas, a work visa allows continuous stay in Russia for the entire period. Work visa holders can request a visa to be extended without leaving the country.

Where to apply for a Russian visa in France?
As of July 2025, all Russian Visa Centers in France are closed. Applicants must apply in person at the Russian consulate. Since 2022, Russian consulates in Marseille and Strasbourg have also been closed.
Important! Consular services are available by appointment only. Appointments must be booked via the official website of the Consular Section of the Russian Embassy in France: paris.kdmid.ru. Appointments cannot be made in person, by phone, or by email.
Without a prior appointment, French citizens can only apply for a private visa in emergency cases (e.g., death of a close relative in Russia).
