Do Polish citizens need a visa to Russia?

Yes, they do. To enter Russia, passport holders of Poland must have a valid Russian visa. Since August 1, 2023, an e-visa is available, allowing a stay of up to 30 days without an invitation. For longer stays or multiple entries a standard visa issued by a Russian consulate is required.

How can Polish citizens obtain a visa to Russia?

Step 1. Get an Invitation

To obtain a Russian visa, Polish citizens must prepare the necessary documents including a visa invitation to Russia, which is the main requirement. The type of invitation depends on the visa category requested (tourist, business, private, work, or other) and the purpose of the visit.

Step 2. Submit a visa application

  1. Through the Russian Consulate.
    — Submission is by appointment only.
    — Limited slots per day — expect long waiting periods.
    — Best suited for urgent or complex cases (e.g., work visas).
  2. Through an agency — "Full visa service".
    — Agencies assist in obtaining a visa remotely, without applicant's presence at the consulate or visa center.
    — Ideal for busy travelers or those who prefer to avoid paperwork.

In light of the closure of the official visa center in Poland, the submission of documents is currently limited to in-person submission at the consulate or through an agency. Please be advised that Russian consulates only accept documents by appointment, and the daily quota for submissions is strictly limited. Therefore, it is advisable to use the services of specialized agencies. These agencies facilitate the remote processing of Russian visas for Polish citizens, eliminating the need for in-person visits to consulate.

⚠️ Regardless of the submission method selected, it is recommended that the visa application process be initiated well in advance to avoid any potential delays. Please be advised that applications cannot be submitted to the consulate more than 90 days prior to the planned entry date.

Business visa to Russia for Polish Citizens

Polish citizens who intend to engage in business negotiations, establish partnerships, execute or extend contracts, or participate in seminars or auctions in Russia must obtain a business visa. For this, an invitation is required from a Russian legal entity, which can be issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation (formerly the FMS), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, or on the letterhead of the Russian inviting organization.

What is the validity period of a business visa for Polish citizens?

The maximum validity period for a business visa for Polish citizens is five years. However, the uninterrupted or overall stay in Russia on a multiple-entry business visa for all EU citizens is limited to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Attention! Multiple-entry visas for up to five years are issued to Polish citizens based on a simplified visa agreement between our countries. To obtain a longer visa, it is necessary to apply consecutively and without long breaks: first, a short-term single or double-entry visa for three months, then a one-year multiple-entry visa, then for two years, followed by three and finally five years. Therefore, without previously used business visas, you cannot immediately apply for a five-year visa.

If a Polish citizen has not previously had business visas to Russia but requires a business visa for more than three months, it is possible to apply using an invitation from the Ministry of Internal Affairs (electronic) or a Telex. Such official invitations can be issued immediately for a period of 365 days with multiple entries, even if the applicant has never held a Russian business visa before.

Types of business invitations to Russia for Polish citizens:

  1. Direct company invitation;
  2. Electronic invitation from the MIA;
  3. Telex from the MFA.

A direct company invitation is a formal request from a Russian organization for the sponsorship of a visa for a Polish citizen. Typically, this invitation type can be issued within one business day.

Company invitation for a business visa for Poland
An electronic invitation, issued by the migration departments of the territorial bodies of the MIA of Russia (formerly the Federal Migration Service), is based on a request from an accredited organization inviting the foreign national. The electronic invitation with a barcode is sent digitally to the database of the relevant Russian consulate, and the applicant receives a printed copy of the invitation via email. Please note that a printed copy of the application is required as there is no original document. The processing time for an electronic invitation for Polish citizens is regulated by the MIA and ranges from 20 to 30 business days.
Invitation for a business visa for Poland

Telex is a direct request from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation to the consulate. When applying, foreign citizens are only required to provide the Telex number (code). Processing time for Telex for Polish citizens is also 20–30 business days.

What is the difference between a Telex and an Electronic invitation?

If a Polish citizen has previously had Russian business visas, we recommend using a company invitation letter:

  • A company invitation letter is cheaper than Telex or an Electronic invitation from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
  • Issued online in five minutes and a copy of the invitation is sent instantly by email after payment.
  • This type of invitation makes it possible to obtain a visa for two to five years (if you have previously used multiple-entry visas to Russia), whereas electronic invitations and Telexes allow you to apply for a visa valid for up to one year.

Important:

  • Applications for a business visa based on a company letter are processed at Russian consulates within 12 business days; expedited processing is not available for this type of invitation.
  • Polish citizens must submit this type of invitation (on company letterhead) to the consulate in original if a multiple-entry visa is requested. You can order courier delivery of the original invitation to Poland.

Here's how to quickly obtain a company invitation letter for a Polish citizen:

  1. Complete an online form.
  2. Pay for your order by credit card on the website.
  3. Receive an email copy of the invitation instantly after payment.

Private visa to Russia for Polish citizens

To visit relatives or friends, Polish citizens should apply for a private visa. The inviting party must obtain a private invitation in accordance with Russian law. The inviter can be a Russian citizen or a foreigner with a residence permit. However, in practice, a private visa is often less convenient, read here why a private visa is not usually recommended.

Validity period of a private visa

A private visa may be issued as a single-entry, double-entry, or multiple-entry. Visa periods range from 30 days to one year, allowing you to remain in Russia for the entire visa duration without need to leave the country.

Obtaining a private visa by invitation

If a Polish citizen is invited by a private person residing in Russia, the inviter must contact the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation at their place of residence. The invitation is issued on Ministry of Internal Affairs letterhead (Electronic invitation) with an individual number. The processing time is up to 30 days, during which comprehensive background checks are conducted, including a review of criminal records and any prior visa or administrative violations. In the event that the Polish applicant has previously violated Russian law, the invitation may be declined.

Obtaining a private visa based on a close relative’s application

Since September 2021, Polish citizens who are close relatives of Russian nationals can apply for a one-year multiple-entry private visa, based on a written application by the Russian citizen requesting entry for a close family member.

Attention! Only close relatives of a foreign citizen are eligible to apply for a multiple-entry private visa.

Who qualifies as a close relative:

  • parents;
  • spouses;
  • children;
  • spouses of children;
  • full and half-siblings;
  • adoptive parents and adopted children;
  • grandchildren;
  • grandparents.

The Russian citizen must submit this application in person to the consular section of the Russian Embassy in Poland. If the Russian citizen is in Russia, the original notarized application is required. You must also provide the original or notarized copy of a document confirming the relationship (such as a birth or marriage certificate) that is recognized in Russia.

Important! To obtain a multiple-entry private visa for a period exceeding three months, Polish citizens must also provide a certificate proving they are HIV-negative. This requirement does not apply for spouses, children, or parents of Russian citizens.

Private visa for special cases

Our company does not assist with private visa invitations. We generally recommend obtaining a tourist visa or a business visa, since these options are faster and require less paperwork. A private invitation can only be obtained by contacting the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia directly at the place of registration.

Obtain a Private Invitation to Russia for Polish Citizens

Our company does not handle the processing of private invitations. We recommend a tourist visa or a business visa instead, as it takes less time. A private invitation must be arranged independently by contacting the GUVM MIA at the address of registration.

Work visa to Russia for Polish vitizens

To legally work in Russia, a Polish citizen must obtain a work visa. It is essential to understand the key differences between a work visa and a business visa. A work visa is the only visa type that allows you to be officially employed and receive a salary in Russia. The Russian employer is responsible for initiating and managing the visa process, and for issuing the invitation. The procedure is complex and consists of several stages:

  1. Obtaining a work permit (handled by the employer).
  2. Obtaining an invitation for an initial 90-day work visa.
  3. Completing the migration registration for the foreign citizen upon their arrival in Russia.
  4. Extending the work visa for the full duration of the employment contract.
  5. Completing migration registration for the entire duration of the extended visa.

The maximum duration of a work visa is three years (for Highly Qualified Specialists—HQS), and, unlike a business visa, a work visa allows continuous stay in Russia for the full period. Work visa holders can have their visas extended without the need to leave Russia.

Our company does not issue or assist with work invitations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Visa extension in Russia is only possible for work and student visas with a valid employment or study contract. Tourist, business, and private visas generally cannot be extended and require the visa holder to leave the country to apply for a new bona fide visa. Exceptions may be made in emergency cases, such as serious illness, death of a close relative, or natural disasters, upon providing supporting documents and applying to the local office of the MIA of Russia. The extension application must be submitted a minimum of 20 business days prior to the visa expiration date.
You should:
  1. Find out the reason for the denial — request a written explanation from the consulate if one is not provided automatically. However, be aware that the consulate has the right to refuse without explanation, and a request for clarification may also be denied.
  2. Correct any mistakes — double-check your documents (application form, invitation, passport validity) and reapply after fixing any issues.
  3. File an appeal — you can appeal the denial through the consulate or court if you believe it was unjustified, with the help of lawyers or the inviting party.
For complex cases (e.g., an entry ban), consulting a migration lawyer may be necessary.
Yes, medical insurance is a mandatory. The policy must provide a minimum coverage of €30,000, be valid throughout the entire territory of the Russian Federation, and cover the entire duration of your trip. Individuals lacking valid insurance may have their visa applications denied by the consulate, and border officials may refuse entry to the country. It is possible to obtain a compliant insurance policy online through accredited companies, including on GoingRus.com.
For Polish citizens who violate the Russian visa regime:
  1. Administrative fine: from 2,000 to 5,000 rubles for individuals, and up to 500,000 rubles for the host party (e.g. employer or inviting relative).
  2. Entry ban: for serious violations like illegal work or overstaying, an entry ban for several years is possible.
  3. Deportation: for gross violations (forgery, illegal stay) forced expulsion from Russia is possible, along with a subsequent ban on re-entry.
To avoid issues, always respect visa conditions and migration registration requirements.
Polish citizens seeking urgent visas for Russia are required to submit an application at the Russian consulate. The application must be accompanied by the necessary documentation, including an invitation from a Russian entity such as a tourist service provider, business entity, or private individual. Please be advised that the processing time is 1–3 business days and requires a higher consular fee. Alternatively, an e-visa (electronic visa) can be obtained online in around four days, does not require an invitation, and allows a stay of up to 30 days.
Yes, Polish citizens must register for migration if they plan to stay in Russia for more than seven business days. Registration of guests is handled by the host party (hotel, landlord, relatives/friends) at the guest's actual residence. For more information on registration, please refer to our dedicated article.
